Joined me for this ride Domingos Pinto e Manuel Pinto and later Paulo Faia.
The idea for this day was to lunch at Montalegre and to reach there we went thru secondary roads.
First stop was at Vieira do Minho for breakfast … as usual whenever I pass here “I’m obliged” to stop here.
When we start at MOTOCAR we took EN105 towards to Guimarães. After leaving this town we went thru EN101, EN207-4, EN207, EN205, EM599-2, again EN205 and EN304…so, we reached Vieira do Minho.
If the trip up here was fantastic, what we had in front of us was also divine.
After Vieira do Minho we took CM1410 and pass the small villages of Real, Quintães, Fontelas, Portela and we continued thru this road (that honestly I do not know the name or number) till the end of it when it “finds” EN103.
I strongly recommend this road
During the time of transhumance (that starts on spring) it is normal that we are faced with cows, horses (Garranos), sheep’s and goats. Due to that we must be always alert when driving because suddenly we can be face to face with these animals after ending a curve.
We just used EN103 for a few km because at Pousadouro-Ruivães we turned left thru CM1797, another nice road, pass Salamonde Dam and took CM1021 till Cabril, Vila Boa, Bostochão and Chelo.
Before Bostochão we stop for a minute to take some photos
From this spot the view is magnific as the road that bring us here.
I must share that although at google this road is called CM1021, the Base Camp (Garmin) call it EN308.
Tthe original idea was to connect Viana do Castelo to Bragança and pass thru:
Ola, Balugais, Corvos, Vila Verde, Caldelas, Amares, Vila Verde, Vilar da Veiga, Cabril, Montalegre, Cortiços, Outeiro Seco, Travancos, Sandim, Santalha, Landedo, Moimenta (proximidades), Parâmio, Cova da Lua, França, Guadramil, Deilão, Babe, Gimonde (que fica próximo de Bragança).
EN308 I insist that this is the most beautiful road of Portugal…
What we had in front of us was a section of the EN308 which is fantastic. Not only for the road itself but also for the landscape that join us.
There are several points where we can stop to contemplate the landscape but this time we chose what I share in the “map” and photos below.
Montalegre is not far but we still have to pass Paradela, Fiães do Rio, Vilaça and Sezelhe.
At Paradela we changed the road to EM514 till Sezelhe where, again, we took EN308.
At Montalegre we lunch on the “Castelo” restaurant and, for me, it was superb.
By the way it was here also that Paulo Faia joined us for the ride.
After lunch we continued the ride thru EM508 till Meixide where we took EM1352, pass Soutelinho da Raia and start riding EM507 where after some km we stop at Miradouro do Contrabandistas (Smuggler’s Viewpoint”)
A nice spot with a good view over the area
Continuing thru EM507 we changed into EM527 when at our left there is an indication to Calvão. Riding in the same road we pass Seara Velha, Ardãos, Nogueira and Robadela.
Again a good experience riding these two roads mentioned above.
At Sapiãos we move towards to Boticas thru EN312. After leaving the town we took EN311 and EN312 being this one our last one and that drive us till Ribeira de Pena
Hope my friends enjoyed that day as much as I do.
