Riding around Serra da Estela is always a must but the roads we went thru yesterday are, at my opinion, 3 of the most beautiful roads we can ride in Portugal.
To reach there we drove thru A3 and A25 and leave it where it indicates Gouveia and Fornos de Algodres (Exit number 24). Coming from Porto it is the only way to win time but if we have it there are a lot of roads to bring us till this point and I can share that they are unbelievable.
I’m writing in plural because this time Paulo Faia joined me for this ride and in the end of the day, I think, that he really enjoyed the ride.
The starting point planned was the village of Folgosinho that is placed at an altitude of around 900 meters. Although we did not visit Folgosinho this time I strongly recommend the visit and for those who really enjoy having a proper lunch they should try Restaurante Albertino.
The next move was going thru a beautiful road called “Caminho Natural” but the idea was as well not to make it entirely but after some km turn left and go off road towards to “Baloiço do Faraó”.
The 360º view here is amazing and it is hot spot that we are obliged to take some photos and appreciate the landscape.
Continuing off road mode we pass thru some beautiful landscapes. Unfortunately, the clock was ticking and we have not too much stops. On the other hand, luckily, we had the “assistance” of a Partridge and after from a Hare to guide us from some meters…We filmed it and for those who wish to invest sometime to see the video they can see how these two animals run so much!
This Off Road, along with other two On Road roads, will be part of the route for a Super Ténérés Portuguese meeting. Proximately I’ll share the event at my Facebook page “Rides in my country and also beyond borders” (https://www.facebook.com/Rides-in-my-country-and-also-beyond-borders-102025457973781)
This 14 km off road are short but they worth all the minutes we spent riding on it.
From the Road “Caminho Natural” we just loosed about one km so what we have to run is almost all the road. GREAT.
The landscape thru out this road is beautiful with the road itself also being amazing where we are constantly leaning our motorcycles and enjoying at the same time the views … of course. They are only about 12 km but to be enjoyed and appreciated.
During Autumn season this road has beautiful colors made by the Beech Trees (we call them in Portugal Faias). The photo below was taken last year end of October but shows what can be seen while riding thru “Caminho Natural”, let’s say on the second part of it when driving from Folgosinho towards Manteigas.
Next move was taking the road EN232 towards Manteigas…and what a road it is. We are constantly leaning and being joined by a beautiful scenery.
This road starts on Mangualde and ends on Belmonte and believe me it is a hell of a road … almost all its extension.
But the idea this time was to not ride on it but only to serve as passage to another road that goes thru the “Glaciar” of Vale do Zêzere. Not any longer a glaciar but the vestiges are still there.
This road EN338 (starts in Vide and ends in Guarda) is unbelievably beautiful. Not only the road itself but the gorgeous scenery that join us all the way thru.
For this ride we only went thru it from Manteigas, pass Covão da Ametade and leave it till when and reach EN339 … but just for some few km because what we had to ride was also a must do. Nave de Santo António till Unhais da Serra.
On the event I mention above my plan is to stop at Covão da Ametade to make our picnic.
This local has lots of interesting “things” but I emphasize one of them, the fact that during more than 300 years it was from here the ice was taken to serve the aristocracy and the kings in Lisbon.
Club Escape Livre once has made a “reconstruction” of this transport. I share below the link for those who are interested to know something more about it:

Well, but continuing to share our ride, and as I already said, we went thru Nave de Santo António that has about 1.5 km to be made in Off Road Mode. This time was ok and not full of holes.
Also here, the road and landscape together, gave us a great ride.
This was not the end of the day for us. No, not all, because after leaving Unhais da Serra we took the amazing EN230 (starts at Aveiro and ends on Covilhã) till Vila Pouca da Beira.
For me it was another excellent day riding thru Serra da Estrela region added by the fact that this time Paulo Faia joined me for it.
