Shifting of the Tides

My opinions aren’t always well received…

I’ve never worried about following current trends if they don’t align with my own ideas. But I also need solid reasons and strong convictions to go against the grain—even if they’re not immediately obvious to most people.

For years, I’ve believed that light adventure motorcycles were the future — and while not everyone agreed, the tide is clearly shifting.

Crossing the 6th Lés-a-Lés off road finishing line

Roughly three years ago, I took a lot of flak for not wanting to install a full rally tower on my 690.
People said I was getting paranoid about weight… but I chose to go with an Adventure Spec’s Mini Fairing so I wouldn’t overload the front of a bike that, even stock, already feels a bit nose-heavy.
Apparently not everyone notices that—and I must be one of the few not riding in front of a mirror.

After countless phone calls with Ricardo Silva and thinking the case was closed, the man finally heard me out—and boom, the brilliant L8NAV Tower by Adventure Men Cave was born!
At last, a viable solution without a crazy weight penalty, improving navigation instrument positioning, adding a proper light and some wind protection, all while keeping things reasonable for bikes like the 690, CRF300L or even pure enduro machines. (Still, wouldn’t mind if it were a bit lighter!)

My ideas don’t just pop out of nowhere. I get obsessed when something doesn’t feel right and can’t rest until I find a solution—or my focus shifts to another target. After hearing multiple experienced riders complain about how rally towers negatively affected their bike’s handling, I just couldn’t bring myself to throw more weight onto the front of a machine that needs rebalancing in the first place—increasing front suspension travel and lowering the rear to behave properly off-road. My nails are already short enough, and anything that doesn’t help just makes things worse…

The fact is, three years later, the trend I anticipated became reality.
“Light is right!”
(And no, it wasn’t me who came up with the slogan.)

Nowadays we see a bunch of minimal, lightweight towers—some more functional than others (watch out for unshielded lights behind windshields!)—and now even a big name like Manuel Lucchese from Rebel X Sports, the guy who built Pol Tarrés’ T7, is offering solutions to lighten the front end of 690/700/701s and enduro bikes even more.

Meanwhile, the market has finally started to welcome lighter adventure bikes!! 😁

Riders everywhere are discovering that light adventure motorcycles offer better control, balance, and confidence — especially off-road!

In 2019, after completing a full season of off-road moto-touring, including the Epic Tour in Morocco, Adventure Days, the Lés-a-Lés Off-Road and even the brutal Tresmarão (coincidentally organized that year by Ricardo Silva… yes, the same guy behind the L8NAV…), I became a firm advocate for using lighter bikes off-road!
Even knowing it could cost me future opportunities, since the marketing machines of the big brands remains stubbornly aligned to protect Big Trail sales, under the whole “fuori strada” image…

But now, it seems a new wave of riders is about to understand where I’ve been coming from. 😁

To be honest, I didn’t expect the shift to come this quickly.

We’ve gone from having only 2 or 3 decent lightADV base models to more than double that—and I still think this is just the beginning of a new era.
Even Keeway is supposed to throwing a rally bike into the mix!

The success of bikes like the Kove 450 Rally, Royal Enfield Himalayan, the surprising CF Moto 450MT, and the upcoming Kove 800X is going to force other brands to respond. Or maybe not… but the consequences will be felt either way!

We’re now (eagerly, and with a bit of skepticism on my part) waiting to see if KTM will finally give us a proper 390 adventure bike, or if they’ll mess it up again…

And if Honda—which I think has the most potential to dominate the segment—will finally drop the nonsense and give us a modern version of the XR400 or XR600, or even a new Dominator.
Wait… they already poked a hole in that canvas…

I’m also curious to see if the MX initiatives by brands like Triumph and Ducati will actually lead to lightweight adventure bikes for the public… or if it’s all just for show in the American market.

I have to confess, it’s very rewarding to see our convictions validated.

Why Light Adventure Motorcycles Benefit from Minimalist Towers like the L8NAV?! 😉

And I believe this shift will open new doors for those who, like me, truly enjoy the off-road side of adventure riding and can get so much more out of it with lighter bikes—rather than buying into the marketing hype around 204–235kg middleweights with 700–1100cc engines…
The ones I like to call “200kg barges!”

This article is part of our exploration into the rise of light adventure motorcycles and how they’re reshaping off-road ADV riding for real-world riders.

A big shout-out to everyone with an open mind toward new ideas and solutions!

And never forget… LIGHT IS RIGHT!!! 😎

Light adventure motorcycles are becoming the choice of more and more riders.
